Blue Flag Criteria for Tourism Boats

In addition to beach and marina operators, boat tour operators offering activities such as diving, wildlife watching, and recreational fishing can now apply to fly the coveted Blue Flag.

As Marine tourism increases in popularity it has become increasingly necessary for operators to function in an environmentally sensitive manner and to provide high quality environmental to customers.

Blue Flag criteria help operators meet these demands and promote sustainable activity to tourists who are becoming more conscious of their responsibility towards the environment.

The Foundation for Environmental Education have recently partnered with the World Cetacean Alliance, with a view to working to establish sustainable practices within the cetacean-watching industry.

Who can apply for the award?

The award is open to motorised boat operators that have environmental sustainability at the heart of their operations. The award not only encourages best practice from boat operators but ensures the public are also informed about the steps necessary to protect our local environment. The tour must be operated by a qualified captain and fulfil criteria depending on the activities they offer.
