A world-renowned eco-label trusted by millions around the globe, the Blue Flag programme is operated under the auspices of the Foundation for Environmental Education headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. In order to qualify for this prestigious award, a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety-related and access-related criteria must be met and maintained. Blue Flag is operated in 50 countries around the world. The Education unit of An Taisce-The National Trust for Ireland operate the programme on behalf of FEE in Ireland. As national operator we are the first point of contact for queries from awarded sites, applicants and the general public here.
To be granted Blue Flag status beaches , marinas and sustainable boating tourism operators must comply with a specific set of criteria relating to water quality, information provision, environmental education, safety and environmental management. The Blue Flag programme is funded in Ireland by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government.
